劇情簡介：

美國弗蒙特州(Vermont)的韋爾頓高中(Welton)是一所保守封閉的寄宿學校，1959年基廷老師回到母校任教，他勇於突破的教學方式，讓使學生突破窠臼走出傳統，『把握每一天，享受人生』，除了啟發學生的思想與創意，更積極擴展學生對於生活的體驗與熱愛。

從學校的舊年鑑上，學生們發現了基廷在學生時代主持過的一個詩歌團體—死亡詩社，這群熱情狂悁的學生決心在古老的印地安洞穴重建這個詩社，並且經常在山洞舉行詩歌朗誦活動。

學生尼爾不顧父親反對，偷偷參加校外戲劇「仲夏夜之夢」的演出，演出雖然十分成功，但父親強迫他轉學，尼爾憤而自殺。為掩蓋醜聞，校方威脅學生簽字作證指控基廷，代罪羔羊基廷被迫辭職。在他離去之前，學生們用特殊的方式向基廷表示對他的熱愛並感謝。

雖然是悲劇，但是全片仍然在冷冷的封閉環境中透露出生命的活力，在不經意的每個畫面，讓觀眾體會出「把握時光，成就非凡」的意涵，是一部合理含蓄的感人影片。
